Key Responsibilities

The Optical Engineer will be responsible for a variety of technical and engineering tasks, including:

  • Collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams on system development projects
  • Converting high-level client requirements into detailed technical specifications
  • Designing and analyzing optical components used in complex systems
  • Conducting thermal and stress analysis on optical systems and materials
  • Integrating and aligning optical components into mechanical assemblies
  • Planning and performing demonstration tests at government testing facilities
  • Preparing technical presentations and reports for customers and management
  • Evaluating tolerance levels and performance specifications of optical components
  • Identifying and specifying optical coatings and materials for system design

Required Qualifications

Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in the design, development, or testing of optical systems
  • Experience working with directed energy technologies or similar advanced systems
  • Proven ability to work in collaborative engineering teams
  • Experience creating and executing test plans for optical systems
  • Ability to manage project timelines while maintaining quality standards
  • Willingness to relocate to Huntsville, Alabama if not already living in the area

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with the following additional skills may have an advantage:

  • Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline
  • Experience with optoelectronic devices such as lasers, photodiodes, spectrometers, or beam profilers
  • Knowledge of optical design software such as Zemax or Code V
  • Programming experience using MATLAB or Python
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools, including SolidWorks or similar design software
  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
